Pretty Tetra / Garnet Tetra – Peaceful Freshwater Community Fish
The Pretty Tetra, scientifically known as Holopristis pulchra and formerly classified as Hemigrammus pulcher, is a small, attractive and peaceful freshwater schooling fish native to the Upper Amazon Basin, including regions of Peru, Brazil and Colombia. Also known as the Garnet Tetra or Black Wedge Tetra, this beautiful species is an excellent choice for planted aquariums and peaceful community fish tanks.
The Pretty Tetra is especially admired for its silvery body, subtle green and violet iridescence, and distinctive dark wedge-shaped marking on the caudal peduncle. When maintained in a comfortable group and provided with suitable aquarium conditions, its reflective colors become more noticeable and add movement and character to a planted aquarium.
Appearance & Size
Pretty Tetras generally grow to around 3.5–4.5 cm (1.4–1.8 inches). Their compact body, shimmering coloration and prominent dark tail marking make them an attractive nano-to-community aquarium fish.
Behaviour & Tank Requirements
These are active, peaceful shoaling fish that feel more secure when kept in groups. A group of 6–10 or more is recommended, allowing them to display more natural schooling behavior and confidence.
A well-planted aquarium with aquatic plants, shaded areas, hiding places and open swimming space provides an ideal environment. Dimmer lighting and natural blackwater conditions created using suitable botanicals, dried leaves or peat can enhance their natural coloration and iridescence.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 23–27°C (74–80°F)
- pH: 5.5–7.0
- Water hardness: Soft to medium, up to approximately 12–18°H
- Aquarium type: Freshwater planted and peaceful community tanks
Stable water quality and regular aquarium maintenance are important for keeping Pretty Tetras healthy and active.
Feeding & Diet
Pretty Tetras are omnivorous and generally easy to feed. They readily accept quality tropical fish flakes, micro pellets and granules. Their diet can be supplemented with appropriately sized live or frozen foods such as daphnia and baby brine shrimp to provide variety and encourage natural feeding behavior.
